A Brutalist Website For An International Architecture Exhibition

A minimalist site for "Skirting the Center", the Svetlana Kana Radević exhibition shown at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture and in Podgorica, built to reflect her architecture and carry the exhibition online.

About the project

This website is dedicated to the exhibition showcasing some of the best works of Svetlana Kana Radević, one of the most prominent architects in socialist Yugoslavia. The exhibition was shown at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture and in Podgorica during the 2021 December Art Scene.

Titled "Skirting the Center: Svetlana Kana Radević on the Periphery of Postwar Architecture", it brings together photographs, original drawings, correspondence and other documents from Kana's private archive, much of it previously unseen. It presents the highlights of her built work for the first time: Hotel Podgorica and Hotel Zlatibor, the Petrovac Apartment Building with its sculptural facade and the Monument to Fallen Fighters at Barutana. We built the exhibition's website.

Brand and design system

A minimalist site for a brutalist architect.

The website follows a simple, sophisticated design that reflects Kana's architectural tendencies and character. A minimalist structure, restrained graphics and a disciplined palette give an online window into her work and the news around the exhibition, and visually echo the symbiosis of local context and contemporary brutalism that defined her buildings. The design defers to the work instead of decorating it.

A body of work defined by restraint, given a digital home that respects it.

Website interface

The same restraint, from concrete to screen.

Kana Radević's buildings are defined by restraint: honest materials, clean lines, nothing decorative for its own sake. The website is built the same way, a minimalist structure and a disciplined palette that stay out of the work's way. That is what lets it carry the highlights of her built career, Hotel Podgorica, the Petrovac Apartment Building and the Barutana monument, and show her best work the way the buildings themselves do, through form rather than flourish.
