A Bilingual Academic Hub For Students And Researchers

A WordPress platform that puts a public faculty's journal, research, news and student resources online in Montenegrin and English, and lets non-technical staff update all of it without a developer.

About the project

The Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature is a public higher-education and research institution in Cetinje, established in 2014 out of the Institute for Montenegrin Language and Literature. It teaches and researches Montenegrin language, South Slavic literature, linguistics and philology, runs teacher education and takes part in international exchange through Erasmus+ and other programmes. It publishes the scientific journal Lingua Montenegrina and works to preserve and digitalise Montenegrin cultural heritage.

We built the faculty's public website: a bilingual WordPress platform that brings its journal, publications, news, student resources and international-cooperation pages into one place. The site serves two audiences at once, a domestic Montenegrin readership and an international academic community, and it stays easy for faculty staff to run on their own.

The challenge

An academic calendar moves every week. A developer queue does not.

A faculty whose subject is a language has to be read and cited, at home and abroad. FCJK had the output for it: a peer-reviewed journal, research, announcements and student forms. What it lacked was a single public home for that work, one that read equally well in Montenegrin and English.

The harder constraint was operational. A journal issue, an exam deadline or an Erasmus+ call changes constantly, and the people who know that content are scholars and administrators, not engineers. Filing a request with a developer for every change was never going to keep the site current, so the faculty had to be able to publish for itself, in both languages, from launch day.

Bilingual by design

Two languages, mirrored page for page.

Every page exists in Montenegrin and English, so a student in Cetinje and a researcher abroad read the same institution rather than a full site and a thin translation. The switcher swaps the page in place, with no separate English mini-site to keep in sync. Mirroring costs editorial effort, since every announcement is written twice. It buys reach into the international academic networks the faculty depends on for Erasmus+ and research cooperation.

Open-access academic publishing

A scientific journal, online and citable.

The platform hosts Lingua Montenegrina and the faculty's wider publications as a browsable open-access archive, so scattered scholarly output becomes one public record researchers can find and cite. The journal itself runs on Open Journal Systems, the open-source platform built for running academic journals, set up alongside the website. For an institution whose purpose is to study and promote a language, being readable in full online is the work.

Every update goes live the moment staff hit publish, no ticket, no waiting.

Staff-run content

The people who know the content publish the content.

News, announcements, downloadable forms and academic pages are all managed in WordPress by non-technical staff. An exam deadline, a new journal issue or an Erasmus+ call goes up in minutes, in both languages, with no development queue in between. The faculty owns its own publishing rhythm, and we stay in the loop for maintenance, SEO and performance rather than for content.

A hub for students and partners

Everything a student or a visiting academic needs, a click away.

Student resources, downloadable forms and documents, Erasmus+ and international-cooperation information, a newsletter sign-up and contact forms sit together in one structure. The most common reasons people come to the site are also the easiest things to find.
